What is professional clothing?
Professional clothing is generally a suit and tie situation. It will vary from job to job. Usually, when you are in orientation, or even at the interview, you will know the expected dress code. It is always best to stick to neutral colors, keeping your dress pants and blazer the same color, shoes and belt being black, and your dress shirt being a darker color such a navy blue or white.
Dressing professionally has many factors to the outfit and we are going to share them with you below to make sure you look your absolute best! Besides the basics (i.e. socks, boxers), first, you will need to get a shirt.
Your pants will need to match your shirt. They shouldn’t be the same color though! Colors will also play into the work atmosphere and dress code.
The blazer usually is the same color as the pants. You don’t want to have too many colors in your outfit or you might clash and stand out in a bad way.
When in a business setting, more times than not you should also be wearing a tie. The tie should complement your outfit and help seal the deal.
Every outfit needs shoes, when it comes to professional attire, business shoes are the best. Neutral colors are always the way to go, black, browns, greys, and navy blue are always safe.
Now we are going to go into “Accessories”, if you are in a true business setting, these are always a positive thing to include. Cufflinks not only help you look professional but they serve a purpose. They help keep your sleeves nice and flush with your skin so they don’t sag or get in the way.
Pocket squares can make or break your outfit. Matching it with your tie is always a safe way to go, having a different color or design is risky but could be a great first impression.
It’s also best to steam your suit before wearing it! This will help release the fibers and spruce it up before your event! Make sure to read the tag before applying any cleaners and to see what temperature setting is best for that material.
Ties can allow for some color and pattern in an outfit. It attracts attention, so be very careful with what you choose.
- Opt for either solid color, or have a small (no larger than a quarter) sized print that covers them.
- Avoid ties that have more than 3-4 colors total, and which have an image or scene printed onto them.
- Ties should match both your shirts and your suits and make sure they use colors that match or go with the rest of your outfit.
- Try to buy shirts and ties together, if possible.
- Bow ties are also generally considered acceptable. However, they are far less common and can be considered unusual or “quirky”.
